Beyond Resolutions: A Wisdom Writing Practice for a Meaningful Year

Discover What Truly Matters This Year with a Simple Wisdom Writing Practice

I’ve always approached traditional goal-setting with caution. For many, goals can feel like a rigid checklist, more of a burden than a guide. Over time, I’ve come to see “Living a Good Life” not as a series of achievements but as a deeply personal and evolving journey.

To me, it’s about aligning with inner wisdom—focusing on what genuinely brings joy and fulfillment rather than striving for outcomes defined by others. This approach doesn’t demand doing more, trying harder, or working smarter. Instead, it invites us to slow down, tune in, and let clarity emerge naturally.

Last year, I found myself pet-sitting two dogs and a cat in a tiny home nestled in olive groves near a Greek beach town. It was during this quiet, reflective time that a Yiddish proverb came to mind: “We plan. God laughs.” That winter, surrounded by the beauty of the Greek Peloponnese, I was reminded how life often unfolds in ways we don’t expect. Staying flexible and open to what comes feels far more enriching than rigidly clinging to plans.

A Gentle Invitation for the Year Ahead

This year, I’m inviting you to join me in a different kind of intention-setting—a practice I call a New Year Wisdom Write. This approach is less about resolutions and outcomes and more about connecting to your inner compass. It’s about finding the words that guide your being, creating a meaningful year centered on inner peace and alignment.

Here’s how you can get started:

Step 1: Create Your Space

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can reflect without distractions. You might light a candle, sip a cup of tea, or play calming music. This is your time to connect with yourself.

Step 2:  Settle In

Take a few deep breaths and notice how your body feels. Let go of what has come before this moment. Bring your attention to your body center—whether that’s your heart, stomach, or another place where you feel grounded.

Step 3: Start Writing

Begin your letter with this prompt:  “Dear [Your Name], Congratulations on a year well lived. 2025 has been a ____________ year for you.”  Let the first word that comes to mind fill in the blank. Then, write freely for 20–30 minutes. Don’t worry about overthinking—just let your thoughts flow.

Step 4: If You Get Stuck

If you feel stuck, try prompts like:

  • It hasn’t all been easy. You’ve endured many challenges and yet you’ve shown up with…
  • You shared so much of your life/yourself…
  • You embraced…
  • You inspired…
  • You showed up…
  • Your achievements and successes…

Step 5: Reflect and Find Your Words

Read your letter aloud and notice how it feels – check in with the body – is it open and expansive or contracted? Highlight any words or phrases that resonate with you. These are your Being Words—qualities or values that feel central to who you are and how you want to live.

Step 6: Use Your Words as Guides

Your Being Words can guide you throughout the year:

  • Frame your goals: “What do I need to do to embody [your word] in my daily life?”
  • Check-in: “Is this action helping me be more [your word]?”
  • Navigate challenges: “How can I respond to this situation with [your word]?”

By keeping your Being Words close, you can navigate the year with greater intention and authenticity—even when life throws its inevitable curveballs.

My Own Wisdom Word

When I did this exercise, the word that stood out was Courageous. And boy, I am well aware that in order to experience courage, I must face a battle or three.  And yet, I’m ready to embrace 2025 with that spirit.

Share Your Words

I’d love to hear about your experience with this practice. What Being Words emerged for you? Share them in the comments, or send them my way.

Wishing you a year of peace, alignment, and self-discovery!

P.S. I’m offering complimentary coaching sessions during the first quarter of the year to help you explore your Being Words further. If you’re interested, let me know, and I’ll send you a calendar link to book a session.
